Galaxy projectors range from £15 party lights to £120 planetariums, and the listings all use the same photos of purple bedrooms. Here is what actually separates them.
We make the Stellara Home Planetarium, so we are not neutral. Where a cheap projector genuinely does the job, we say so.
1. Optics: image or colour wash?
The single biggest difference. Film-disc optics project a real photograph of the sky. LED diffusers throw a coloured glow. If the listing never mentions film discs or lenses, it is a colour wash.
2. Noise
Rotating projections need a motor, and cheap motors hum. If it is going in a bedroom, look for wording about silent rotation, and check reviews for noise complaints. A projector you switch off because of the hum is wasted money.
3. Coverage
A bedside unit should fill a ceiling, roughly 20 to 26 square metres, in a dark room. Products that light a patch of wall look nothing like their photos.
4. Power
USB power is the most flexible: wall plug, laptop or power bank all work. Check whether a wall adapter is included, as many projectors, including ours, ship without one.
5. Variety
A fixed pattern gets old. Interchangeable discs keep it interesting, and they are a good sign of real optics, since a colour wash cannot swap skies at all.
6. Ignore resolution claims
You will see 4K projection on £20 lights. Treat it as decoration on the listing. Film discs and lenses do not work in pixels, and no product in this category is a 4K video projector.
Price bands, honestly
- £15 to £35: LED colour-wash lights. Fine as mood lighting.
- £40 to £70: film-disc planetariums like Stellara at £49.99. Real skies, swappable discs.
- £80 to £120 plus: larger planetariums with bigger lenses. Better again, if the budget suits.

Quick answers
How much should I spend on a galaxy projector in the UK?
£15 to £35 buys an LED mood light. £40 to £70 buys a film-disc home planetarium with real astronomy imagery. Spend more only if you want a larger lens.
Are 4K galaxy projectors real?
No. Film-disc projectors do not work in pixels and LED colour-wash lights have no resolution at all. Treat 4K claims in this category as marketing.
What power supply do galaxy projectors use?
Most use USB. Check whether a wall adapter is included, as many ship with just the cable and run off any standard plug, laptop or power bank.
