Five galaxy projector buying mistakes to avoid

We have read hundreds of galaxy projector listings and reviews. The same five mistakes come up again and again.

We make the Stellara Home Planetarium, so we are not neutral. Where a cheap projector genuinely does the job, we say so.

1. Buying the photo, not the optics

Every listing shows the same vivid purple bedroom. What matters is how the image is made. If there is no mention of film discs or a lens, you are buying an LED colour wash and it will not look like the photo.

2. Believing resolution claims

4K projection on a £20 light is marketing decoration. Nothing in this category is a pixel-based video projector. Judge optics by defined stars, not invented numbers.

3. Ignoring the motor

A rotating sky is the whole charm, but a humming motor in a silent bedroom gets a device switched off permanently. Look for silent rotation and check the reviews for noise.

4. Not checking coverage

Some units light a dinner-plate patch of wall. A proper bedside planetarium should fill the ceiling of a normal bedroom, around 20 to 26 square metres, in the dark.

5. Forgetting the box contents

USB projectors often ship without a wall adapter, ours included. Not a problem, any phone plug or power bank works, but know before the unboxing, not after.

The one-minute checklist

  • Film discs or lens named in the listing?
  • Silent rotation mentioned?
  • Ceiling-scale coverage stated?
  • USB powered, adapter situation clear?
  • Money-back guarantee if the optics disappoint?

Quick answers

Why does my galaxy projector look nothing like the advert?

Almost always because it is an LED colour-wash light and the advert photo was shot with a film-disc planetarium or heavily edited. The optics determine the result.

What coverage should a galaxy projector have?

A bedside planetarium should fill a normal bedroom ceiling, roughly 20 to 26 square metres, in a dark room. Units that light a small patch of wall disappoint.

Do galaxy projectors come with wall plugs?

Many USB projectors ship without a wall adapter. Any standard USB plug, laptop or power bank runs them, but check the box contents before ordering.
